Recognizing the significance of access to information, the 74th UN General Assembly proclaimed 28th September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) at the UN level in October 2019. This designation had been proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference in 2015, following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57.
In Cambodia, the Access to Information Working Group (A2iWG), in collaboration with development partners (DPs), will co-organize a celebration on this important day to align with the global theme: “The Importance of the online space for access to information”. For this event, an A2i campaign with a series of seven activities will be initiated to promote internet accessibility and connectivity in order to foster innovation, informed decision-making, individual empowerment, social inclusiveness and progress. This campaign will include key messages from CSO leaders and CBOs; a live streamed debate between youth and policy-makers; a video animation series; a youth vlog competition on the importance of A2I in business and economic development; a dance with at least 100 participants, including CSOs, journalists, young people, and the public and A2i Talks emphasizing the importance of access to information as a fundamental human right and its impact on citizens' daily lives and their participation in public life. These activities will highlight the need for international cooperation in strengthening access to information to protect human rights and achieve the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development goals.
